The Visionary Path of Judith M. Nugent
Every company has a foundational story, and ours is deeply rooted in the pioneering spirit of Judith M. Nugent. Judy’s journey, which began in nursing and serendipitously led her to audiology, laid the groundwork for who we are today.
Judy embarked on her nursing career on February 15, 1965, at the United Liverpool Hospitals, specifically the Royal Southern Hospital. She dedicated herself to her training, successfully completing it on July 3, 1967. With her nursing qualifications in hand, Judy then moved to Dublin, where she took a position at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital.
It was within the corridors of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital that Judy’s path truly diverged. There, she discovered a department dedicated to Audiology. This was not a well-known field at the time, but something about it resonated deeply with her. Intrigued by the science of hearing and the potential to help others in a different capacity, Judy made a pivotal decision: she would pursue the study of audiology. This bold step, driven by her innate curiosity and desire to explore new frontiers in healthcare, ultimately shaped not only her career but also the very foundation of our company.

A Founding Figure and Influential Voice in Irish Audiology
Judy’s commitment to the field of audiology extended far beyond her individual practice. Her dedication to professionalising and advancing audiology in Ireland was clearly demonstrated when she became a founder member of the Irish Society of Audiology. This significant organisation was formally established on August 8, 1979, bringing together 19 ENT consultants and 9 audiologists. Today, this body is known as The Irish Academy of Audiology.
The very first meeting of the Irish Society of Audiology took place on Saturday, December 6, 1979, and it was Judy who delivered the impactful opening speech. This moment underscored her pivotal role in not just founding the society but actively leading its initial steps.
Judy’s expertise and influence also extended to critical national initiatives. She played an instrumental part in the writing of the “Green Book” in 1998, officially titled “Hearing Disability Assessment: Report of the Expert Hearing Group.” This foundational document established the Irish Hearing Disability Assessment system, providing crucial guidance for Courts in assessing compensation claims for noise-induced hearing loss and/or tinnitus. Her involvement ensured that the system was built on sound audiological principles. Furthermore, in the 1990s, Judy was highly involved in the complex Irish Army deafness cases, where her deep understanding of audiology was vital in navigating these significant legal proceedings.
Beyond her work with legal and assessment frameworks, Judy was also a dedicated member of the Irish Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists, holding membership number 007. This demonstrates her broad engagement across the audiology profession in Ireland.
In the 1980s, Judy’s commitment to public health was further highlighted when her expertise was sought by the National Industrial Fire and Safety Training Centre (NIFAST). She developed and taught an Audiometry course to its members, focusing on the critical issue of noise in the workplace. This initiative highlights her foresight in promoting hearing health beyond clinical settings and her dedication to industrial safety, ensuring that her influence resonated across various sectors in Ireland. Judy’s involvement as one of the pioneering audiologists in these groups and initiatives showcases her crucial role in shaping the future of audiological care and awareness across the country.
The Enduring Legacy of Diagnostic Audiology Services (DAS)
Diagnostic Audiology Services (DAS) stands today as a premier Irish hearing clinic, boasting a proud tradition of excellence that spans over three decades. Our story begins in 1985 with the visionary Judith M. Nugent, a distinguished audiologist whose extensive experience at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin, laid the groundwork for a truly exceptional practice. From its inception, DAS has been at the forefront of hearing care in Ireland, driven by Judy’s unwavering commitment to improving lives through better hearing.
Built on a strong foundation of family and expertise, DAS has always prioritized personalised hearing solutions, carefully tailored to each individual’s needs. This dedication to exceptional care is evident in our continuous growth and expansion. In 2014, Diagnostic Audiology Services moved from its original location at the Charlemont Clinic, establishing new, convenient clinics in Maypark, Artane (a clinic proudly dedicated to the memory of Charles Nugent), and the Beacon Sandyford. This strategic expansion allowed DAS to serve a wider community with its renowned expertise.
The family legacy at DAS was further cemented in the early 2000s when Judy’s daughter, Charyl Nugent, joined her in the practice. This collaboration brought a new generation of expertise and commitment to the clinic, reinforcing the personal touch that defines DAS.
In 2017, we were delighted to welcome Audiologist Renata Ferrari to our team. Renata, with her master’s degree in hearing, balance, and communication, quickly proved invaluable, significantly enhancing our services and upholding the high standards set by our founder. In recognition of her profound contributions, Renata became a partner with Charyl Nugent in 2024, a pivotal step that ensures Judy’s enduring legacy of compassionate care will continue for generations to come. While Judy officially retired in 2019, her invaluable knowledge and pioneering spirit remain a cornerstone of our practice, deeply embedded in everything we do.
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Judy’s passing on November 9, 2024. She is profoundly missed but fondly remembered by her dedicated team and the many wonderful patients, who became friends, and still inquire about her. Her impact on audiology in Ireland and on the lives of countless individuals will never be forgotten.
